As capital projects progress and generous support flows in, excitement inevitably begins to rise, and we rejoice in God’s provision. But there is more to the BUILD campaign than dollars and cents, bricks and mortar. When the last brick has been laid and the last penny paid, what is it that we will have built? The vision for the College’s newly launched comprehensive campaign is bigger than buildings and blueprints. It stretches far beyond even Covenant College itself—spanning past, present and future—to a kingdom vision for building up the body of Christ and proclaiming His preeminence to the world. We are building on the foundation laid by those who have gone before us—the mission begun by the founders and carried on with utmost care by committed faculty, staff, and students for more than 50 years—as well as on the sure foundation of Jesus Christ, His church, and His inerrant word. We are humbled to play a small role as workers, and to hold a small place as stones, in this kingdom edifice to God’s glory. Beyond mere buildings, we are also being built. In the spirit of Colossians 2, which exhorts us to walk in Christ Jesus our Lord, “rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith,” Covenant College seeks to raise up students who understand and embrace their identity in Christ, who are steeped in scripture and equipped to apply its truths to every aspect of their lives, and who are committed to Christ-like service in whatever callings God gives them. And, with the scriptural assurance of Christ’s preeminence in all things, we are building for the future, for generations of Covenant students to come, who will carry the good news of His saving grace and of His lordship to every corner of society. We have been given a calling. We know that our work on Lookout Mountain is only a small piece of God’s work that spans the world, but we are honored and excited to pursue our distinctive role in His larger kingdom with all of the energy and gifts that He has given us. So, ultimately, we are building so much more than an academic building, library space, a residence halls, athletic fields, and a better Carter Hall. We are building more than endowment and scholarship funds.
Our prayer for Covenant alumni is that their time on Lookout Mountain would see them built up in Christ, established in the faith, and committed to playing their part in the realization of Christ’s rule over all things. We are building in order to build them up, so that they might build up the body of Christ, so that the gospel of the kingdom of Christ might go forward into every corner of the earth.
