Covenant College has received a $4 million gift from the estate of Mr. Lowell Andreas and a $1 million grant from a foundation that wishes to remain anonymous.
Lowell Andreas of Naples, Florida, and Mankato, Minnesota, was a former president of Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) Company, and loved philosophy and Reformed theology. His pastor, Jim Conrad ’62, introduced Mr. Andreas to Covenant College, and as he learned more about Covenant’s mission and purpose, Mr. Andreas became a generous donor.
The College’s newest residence hall, opened in the fall of 2007, was named in his honor. Mr. Andreas gave liberally despite having no family connection to Covenant and having never stepped foot on the College’s campus.
“Lowell’s appreciation for and commitment to Covenant grew over fifteen years, across administration and staff changes and culminating in this marvelous legacy gift from his estate,” said Covenant College President Niel Nielson. “We are deeply grateful for his deep convictions about Christian education and Covenant College education in particular, and we rejoice that generations will enjoy the blessing of his foresight and generosity. Thanks be to God!”

Ten years ago, on the steps of the Bethlehem Center, an outreach center in one of Chattanooga’s less advantaged neighborhoods, Daniel Baker ’00 shared his tater tots with a 7-year-old boy named Danzel.
Today, Danzel lives with Daniel and his wife, Brooke, who have opened their home to him as mentors and friends. It all began when seven Covenant students decided to move into a house in Danzel’s neighborhood.
“We wanted to live with the people we were ministering to,” says Daniel. “It was a real challenge, but it allowed us to see God at work in ministry in a very powerful way.”
From his love for inner-city ministry and involvement with a new inner-city Chattanooga church plant, to his work as the owner of Tight Seal Plumbing, Daniel is a man who points people to Christ by serving in ordinary ways. But his calling is nothing less than extraordinary.

Jeff '85 and Leslie (Baum) Clinton '85—two members of the first information and computer science graduating class at Covenant—have spent years generously and actively supporting the College.
“Covenant prepared us to appreciate the sovereignty of Christ in every vocation and aspect of life,” says Leslie. “We learned to see every calling as important and sacred, not just callings in professional Christian ministry. This is an important part of Covenant’s mission and is one of the reasons we continue to support the College so actively.”
The Clintons live in Roanoke, Virginia, where Jeff works from home developing and supporting corporate database systems for Ingram Lightning Group, a company based in La Vergne, Tennessee. Leslie homeschools two of their children and tutors in a classical homeschool group once a week. The family is active in church and community activities, and they love telling prospective students about Covenant College. Jeff and Leslie want to send all four of their kids to Covenant.

What’s the best thing about the renovations to the library?
“I love the upstairs,” says Janine Haveman ’11. “It is so much more open, and there are a new variety of places to study. More people seem to study in the library now.”
“I’ve really loved the new group study rooms on the second floor,” says Lydia Jones ’10. “They are always filled, and during big test weeks it is a scramble to get up there first to have a room to work in for the night.”
With plans built on input from student surveys and focus groups, Kresge Memorial Library has become a more inviting, accessible, and functional place. The first phase of renovations took place in summer 2006, and the second phase was completed in summer 2008.

The grant will match dollar for dollar all gifts for student scholarships up to $250,000.

After moving to the U.S. from Rwanda, Marie-Aimee Abizera ’05 applied to Covenant College on the advice of a family friend, and God opened the doors for her to attend. Today, Aimee is working with African immigrants in Nashville, finishing a master’s degree in counseling psychology, and preparing to move to Africa to pour out her heart for the HIV/AIDS population.
Upon graduating from Covenant with her degree in psychology, Aimee served as the director of Nations Ministry Center, a Christian organization that works with refugees and immigrants in Nashville. Following her work there, she enrolled in graduate school, and recently took a four-month trip to Africa to serve in villages and to search for God’s purpose for her life. Her search brought her to AIDS orphans in Mbarara, Uganda, and former child soldiers in Gulu, a war-torn village in northern Uganda.

When Bob and Barbie Wilkinson dropped off their son, Jon ’08, at Covenant as a freshman, they left campus without the tears they had been advised to expect.
“We drove down the mountain with smiles just wrapped around the back of our heads!” says Barbie. “Jon was so excited to be there. We went back and told his high school counselor: ‘Not everybody cries!’”
Since that day, they have also dropped off their second son, Dave ’11 at Covenant, and have become enthusiastic financial supporters of the College.

On August 28, 2008, at the 54th annual convocation of Covenant College, President Niel Nielson announced the naming of two new additions to Covenant's campus: a new academic building, Brock Hall, and the newest portion of the campus green, the Dottie Brock Gardens. These names honor former Covenant College president and current Covenant College Foundation president, Dr. Frank Brock, and his wife, Mrs. Dottie Brock.
Dr. Brock is a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and has a distinguished record of community service. After a career in business, he became the College's president in 1987, and served until 2002, at which point he became the first president of the Covenant College Foundation.

Why does Laura Bannister ’07, a smart and quirky farm girl from Virginia, love theatre?
“I love the power that live storytelling has on a group of people—the audience,” she says. “It is a privilege to be a physical part of telling stories that move and change people.”
While studying theatre at Covenant, Laura Bannister ’07 acted in seven plays, produced four plays, and directed two plays. Now she works at Taproot, a professional theatre company run by Christians in Seattle.
“Covenant is the place where I grew up, where I went from girl to woman,” reflects Laura. “It’s the place where I learned my craft, where I went from uncertainty to passion and direction. It’s a place of intellectual challenge, where I struggled with my faith, where I learned to trust people, where I learned to rely on other Christians. It is a home.”

Celebrate with us! Through the Lord’s gracious provision, we have reached our $31,000,000 goal for the BUILD campaign. This announcement comes much earlier than we expected—less than three years into our five-year campaign!
We began this campaign with prayer, and God has seen fit to bless our efforts tremendously, using many friends of the College to uphold and strengthen Covenant as it pursues its distinctive mission. We offer our heartfelt thanks to those who have given so much—in prayer, in sacrificial gifts of both time and resources, and in introducing us to new friends who believe in and support the mission of Covenant College. Thank you for your generosity and for your faith in the work God is doing through Covenant! We are so grateful for how this campaign has included the whole Covenant community and extended Covenant family.
As we look ahead to the final two years of the five-year campaign, we are thrilled that God’s incredible provision allows us to reach forward in faith, building on the momentum of the BUILD campaign thus far. In considering the future needs of the College, it has become apparent that the scope of our plans needs to widen in pace with the scope of God’s provision.

During his time at Covenant, Jonathan Wilson ’06 pursued studies in biology, psychology, and interdisciplinary studies, before graduating with a degree in economics & community development and a minor in youth ministry. Now, two years after graduation, he’s back at Covenant taking prerequisites for medical school and shouldering a variety of responsibilities—from mentoring high school students at a local church to coordinating the annual alumni phonathon.
“Running the phonathon has been a great experience,” says Jonathan, who hails from Augusta, GA. “It’s been really fun to hear other people’s stories of what they loved and memories they had. There are people scattered all over the nation praying for this place. I’ve seen that at work. You get out and you meet Covenant alumni from all over, and you have this connection, this bond of Christ and even of prayer, that in a sense they’ve prayed for you before. Prayer changes your attitude of how you see things happening at Covenant, leaving room for God to work.”

On February 26, over 400 of Covenant’s alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends gathered at The Chattanoogan for the biggest fundraising event in the history of Covenant College. Among them were nearly 100 new friends of the College who were being introduced to the distinctive mission of Covenant for the very first time.
“It wasn’t your typical fundraiser,” reflected Derek Halvorson ’93. “It was thought-provoking, spirit-moving, and not about Covenant-for-Covenant’s-sake, but Covenant for the kingdom’s sake.”
